This is MistyHug, captured in Augusta in the lower Southwest of Western Australia.
I seem to have a memory of my father standing here holding me when I was 4, I don’t know if that memory is real, but I do know I’ll hold onto it forever. My father left the family home when I was 5 and not allowed back, it’s a void in my life that will never be filled, I spent most of my life searching for him but made peace with the fact that I couldn’t find him a few years ago. When I visit this area I always sit here and take time to reflect and feel that hug again, whether it is real, or not. Everyone has a place they can sit a reflect on something dear to them, I hope you have that place in your life and I hope that you are able to make peace with situations that may cause you distress. This is the great AussieBath, simply put, the cooling ocean after a long hot day on the tools in the summertime. With the beautiful late sunsets in our summer I was able to nip home, hop into my beach gear and grab my camera bag for a cooling evening by the ocean.. This is image was shot at Mettams Pool a small natural lagoon that a local fellow, Frank Mettam, decided to clear some of the sharp rocks and reef to help make the shoreline more pleasant for local swimmers by chipping and blowing the sharp edged rocks that are scattered in the pool. The beach is just a few 100 meters from Toe Stubbers and would you believe?, locals are still complaining and trying to find ways to adjust a natural environment to suit themselves. The beach has a fabulous wheelchair friendly ramp that is currently under repairs, with the ramp gone we photographers have access to a new scene that has not been captured in 92 years! The night this was captured old mate jumped the water and swam out way past the reef, to the sharky bit to check his cray nets for that nights dinner. We love evenings like this in Perth. I've always loved storms and the ability to capture them is something simply beautiful. My interested started early when I started following a storm photographer who I believe to be the best in the world, the late Dale Sharpe. I used to watch his behind the scenes on Insta in absolute awe, study his images with so much enthusiasm. I'd try and replicate his cloudscapes with an iPhone, when I asked questions he'd happily answer. Fast forward to today and I am still learning how to shoot the dark moody skies. A few days before this shot I had watched a Nikon School session by Will Eades, armed with my refreshed knowledge to suit shooting with the Z6 I waited for a storm to arrive. Lucky for me it was on a weekend and just near my home, this night the storms were quite a distance off the coast and I missed capturing my first bolt - and still trying to shoot one! I replayed the settings, tips and tricks I had learnt and bolted home to check what I had captured, by-the-way editing a storm cloud is another whole new learning experience as the colour corrections can go dramatically wrong! However, I am very happy with the results of this shot. Details: AquaStorms is currently priced at 0.40 ETH, is a 1/1 and has not been sold elsewhere. This is Injisets a location where I’ve never shot sunset before, in fact I had meticulously planned an astro shot near-by over a few months.
I knew that I had one opportunity in 2021 to get the precise astro shot I wanted, the location is a 3 hour drive South from where I live in Perth (or 8 hours as photographers tend drive-stop-drive-stop-drive) accommodation near-by was booked out so I had decided to just pull an all nighter as I’m an absolute wimp when it comes to driving at night and kangaroos bouncing out of the bushes in front of your car. I pulled up in the late arvo a little weary, unfortunately the weather made a last minute change and clouds started to roll in, I knew my astro shot would have to wait another 12 months. I was in a pickle as I had no accommodation for that night. Luckily Mother Nature decided to help me out, as the arvo light hit I knew I was in for a treat and realised it was my first time shooting sunset at my favourite place! The tuft of pink wildflowers soaked in the light and the stunning southwest rocks glowed a deep colour. I stuck around for an hour or so in the hope that the clouds would clear, they didn’t. As Inji is a very quiet area I didn’t feel safe napping in the car while I waited for dawn, I decided to run the kangaroo gauntlet back to the closest town, Yallingup. I was hanging out in my car when another car pulled up near-by, I started to feel uneasy and a little panicky but saw the person was doing the same as me. I have to say my worn bones did not cope with sitting up in a car and I think I had a record amount of leg cramps that night so I was pretty happy when the sun finally started to rise. I grabbed my jetboil (best invention ever) made a cuppa and some porridge before the days adventure started. The person in the car near-by surfaced and we had a laugh about car sleeping, turns out he was from my suburb and wasn’t doing too well, we chatted for an hour or so and he promised he was staying with a friend so he went on his way. This is how I came about photographing InjiSets and how the best planned trips can take a turn and end up a total chance image that you’ve never captured before!
