ForrestElves, an image shot on a random, boggy, red dirt track in the depths of John Forrest National Park in the Perth Hills area.
I had a planned day off work and decided to head to the hills to capture some Autumn colours. Once I had the shot I’d planned I thought I would explore an Astro location further inland, on the way I spotted a thick fog rolling through the valley to the east and changed my plans.
When I arrived in the valley area I saw the sun breaking through the fog causing the most beautiful rays, I’ve chased a tree/ray/fog shot for a few years now and I realised I was finally getting my chance.
I found a dirt road leading up a steep hill and thought this would be a great spot for some layers and texture, so I chugged my non-4WD up the damp, slippery hill & precariously parked her just before a flooded part of the track.
Up the hill I scrambled to have this scene unfold before me, I knew I had the shot I’ve been chasing, the light, the rays, the trees.
Behind me was some sort of animal rustling in the bushes, I yelled out a few times and knew the ball head of my tripod could be handy should an animal come at me, I photographed while keeping a close eye on the tree, luckily I got my shot and what ever it was stayed away.
Some of the best shots are taken on a chance trip, they are completely unplanned and the most pleasant surprise a photographer could ask for.
